According to the Blue Hole new consumption report, on February 24, according to foreign reports, activists believe that Thailand will legalize e-cigarettes after the possible general election in May.

According to ENDS Cigarette Smoke Thailand (ECST), Thailand currently prohibits the use of electronic cigarettes, but is discussing ending the ban.

“This work has been brewing for several years. It has not stopped. In fact, the draft legislation on electronic cigarettes is waiting for debate and approval by the Thai parliament,” said Asa Saligupta, director of ECST.

Saligupta pointed out that although the anti-e-cigarette activists seem to have listened to the opinion of the Minister of Public Health, most politicians and the public still support the lifting of the ban on e-cigarettes in the country.

“I still fully believe that safer nicotine products will be regulated in Thailand. The regulation will provide better protection for consumers, encourage more smokers to quit deadly cigarettes, and ensure that we can better control the purchase age of electronic cigarettes for teenagers,” he said.

ECST said that smoking causes about 50000 deaths in Thailand every year.
“If we want to significantly reduce smoking related diseases and premature deaths, we must lift the strict ban and punishment on electronic cigarette products in Thailand,” Saligupta said.

According to ECST, nearly 70 countries/regions have adopted the regulatory framework of safer nicotine products, resulting in a sharp decline in their overall smoking rate.
