On November 5, the global authoritative journal of toxicology, Toxicology in Vitro, published a team paper by Yu Suhong, an associate researcher of Fuzhou University, pointing out that the impact of electronic cigarettes on cells is significantly less than that of traditional cigarettes.

This study was the first to compare the effects of electronic cigarette and cigarette on human bronchial epithelial cells by exosome proteomics. Exosomes are small membrane vesicles in cells, containing complex RNA and proteins, which can be used as biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of cancer and other diseases.

The research data showed that cigarette agglutinin led to more differences in the expression of exosome proteins in cells, and significantly enriched in the intratumoral pathway; The difference caused by electronic cigarette is less. At the same time, toxicological studies found that cigarette agglutination significantly inhibited cell activity, while electronic cigarette agglutination did not show similar negative effects, suggesting that the cytotoxicity of electronic cigarette is relatively small.

In recent years, a number of studies have found that electronic cigarettes may be a “harm reduction product”.

In 2021, Penn State University School of Medicine published a paper in Cancer, saying that electronic cigarette can not only be used as an effective smoking cessation tool, but also reduce the generation of lung carcinogens in smokers. In 2022, the journal Nature published a comment pointing out that for periodontal health patients, electronic cigarette may be a safer substitute for nicotine, which can reduce the risk of oral cancer.

Associate researcher Yu Suhong said that this study systematically analyzed the safety of cigarettes and electronic cigarettes from the perspective of exosomes for the first time, filling the gap in related fields.

“The research results show that compared with traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are relatively less harmful and may be a harm reducing product,” Yu Suhong said, “but electronic cigarettes are not completely harmless and should not be used by non smokers.
