On May 31, local time, the World Health Organization presented the 2022 World No Tobacco Day Award to Mexican President Lopez for his contribution to protecting the health of the Mexican people and actively controlling tobacco use.

After accepting the award, Mexican President López signed an executive order declaring a ban on the sale and circulation of e-cigarettes in Mexico.

The Mexican government disagrees with the conclusion that e-cigarettes are healthier than cigarettes. In fact, Mexico has banned the import of e-cigarettes since at least October of last year, and even earlier, the government has introduced other laws to stop the sale of e-cigarette devices.

At least 5 million Mexicans have tried e-cigarettes at least once, according to estimates from the Mexican government’s own figures.
