  1. Public Health England: E-cigarettes are the most popular way to quit smoking

Public Health England (PHE) has released its seventh independent report on vaping in the UK, outlining attitudes towards vaping and smoking in the country.

Looking at the prevalence of e-cigarette use among adults, the proportion of e-cigarette users who also smoke has declined since 2012.

While the numbers vary, according to PHE, which is the result of different definitions of smoking status, data from the Smoking Toolkit study showed that smoking rates fell from 92% to 51%.

The PHE study also showed that the use of vaping products was the most popular aid for smoking cessation.

“In 2020, 27.2 percent of people had used vaping products to quit smoking in the past 12 months,” the report said. “This compares to 15.5 percent of over-the-counter or prescription nicotine replacement therapy (2.7 percent) ), and 4.4% for valerianine.”

Meanwhile, the 2020 Smoking and Healthy Tobacco Free Action Britannia Youth UK Youth Survey, which surveyed 11 to 18-year-olds, showed a “small change” in vaping levels in the population over the past few years, The current prevalence of vaping (at least monthly) was 4.8% in March 2020, the same as in March 2019.

In this group, the majority of smokers were ex-smokers or current smokers, and the main reasons for smoking were: “try it out”, “for fun/I like it” or “like the flavor”.

Of those who use e-cigarettes, 11.9% say they do it to quit smoking
